Hi Nikki,

Please summarise Crazy, Undercover, Love in 20 words or less.

Charley hatches a crazy plan to work undercover with dreamy CEO Alex to save her career and reputation. Easy, right?

Do you have a most creative time of day?

Morning used to be my most creative time of day but since being offered my publishing deal and needing to work on more promo and books, I’ve had to learn to be creative whenever and wherever I get the chance, given that I have kids and a full-time day job. So my most creative time could be at 6.30 a.m., lunch time or late at night! I’ll take whatever I can get 🙂

Do you have a favourite place you go to for inspiration or a favourite activity?

My brain seems to whirr away pretty well on story ideas when I’m either driving, out on longs walks or doing housework, but to be honest I’m lucky in that inspiration strikes all the time and I have more story ideas and characters than I have time to actually put down on paper.

Are you a pantser or a plotter?

A bit of both! I have a broad outline in my mind of how a story will begin and end, and who the main characters are, so there’s a rough plot in my head … but when I sit down to write it just sort of pours out organically, so then the pantser side comes out!

What project are you working on now?

I’m just working on finishing my second full length book for HarperImpulse. The first chapter was in the final of Novelicious Undiscovered 2012, a contest for unpublished writers.

The book is set in London and is about Zoe Harper, who moves in with music producer Matt Reilly as his live-in nanny to get revenge for what he and his brother did to her younger sister. But of course it doesn’t turn out to be as simple as she thinks it’s going to be!

The title is still being confirmed so I’ll get back to you on that one …

Do you think movie adaptations do books justice? Do you have a favourite?

I would say that most movie adaptations don’t do the books they’re based on anywhere near the justice they deserve. Most of the time I’ve been disappointed by adaptations; maybe because films can’t live up to what my imagination produces? Or maybe I’m just hard to please ha ha … Saying that, I think The Lord of the Rings films are pretty impressive. However my two absolute favourite adaptations are both films based on Stephen King stories – The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. Both are perfectly executed and make me cry every time I watch them.

Have you done any creative writing/writing courses that you would recommend to others?

I did a very short creative writing course run by my local college when I was eighteen but apart from that haven’t done anything formal. I wouldn’t tell people not to do creative writing courses, nor would I advocate them – simply because I’m not the expert.

I think there are many paths to publication. My own was paved with lots of reading – both fiction and non-fiction, including books on grammar, creative writing and publishing – plus lots of writing, receiving critiques through the Romantic Novelists Association New Writers Scheme, rewriting, attending workshops and conferences and soaking up any piece of advice other writers were willing to offer.

Who is your target audience?

My target audience are probably women between 18 to 35 but honestly I’d be very pleased to have some male readers and anyone who loves a good love story 🙂

Have you written for other genres or plan to in the future?

I want to keep writing romance/chick lit but would like the opportunity to write a New Adult book. I also have a WIP that is more women’s commercial fiction than specifically romance. We’ll see what happens!

What has been the best part of your writing journey so far?

I can’t say there has been a best part so far as there have been so many highlights it’s hard to choose one. The best and most memorable moments include being told I was on the long list for the Mills & Boon/RNA anthology Truly, Madly, Deeply and later that my short story had been accepted; my lovely editor Charlotte calling me with a four work contract with HarperImpulse; seeing my first book cover; getting my first 5* review … it’s been a long but rewarding journey so far and I can’t wait for what happens next.

Thanks so much for having me here – it’s been loads of fun 🙂

Wishing you success with all your writing projects Nikki 🙂
