Jera’s Jamboree : Feature Post Caroline James

I’m delighted to be welcoming Caroline James to Jera’s Jamboree today:

Caroline James Profile pic 1

Caroline James was born in Cheshire and wanted to be a writer from an early age. She trained, however, in the catering trade and worked and travelled both at home and abroad.  Caroline has owned and run many related businesses and cookery is a passion alongside her writing, combining the two with her love of the hospitality industry and romantic fiction.

Caroline can generally be found with her nose in a book and her hand in a box of chocolates and when not doing either, she likes to write, climb mountains and contemplate life.

She writes fun, romantic fiction and is a member of the RNA and The Society of Authors. She has numerous short stories published and writes a regular column for an online lifestyle magazine.

Her debut novel, Coffee, Tea, The Gypsy & Me is set in North West England, in a country house hotel at the time of a famous gypsy horse fair.  The book went straight to number three on Amazon and was Ebook of the Week in The Sun.  Her second novel, So You Think You’re A Celebrity…Chef? is set in London, Ireland and Barbados and  will be published on October 4th, 2013 by ThornBerry Publishing.

So, You Think You’re A Celebrity…Chef?

It’s very exciting to be embarking on my first online book tour and huge thanks to Shaz for hosting me here on her great blog. So, You Think You’re A Celebrity…Chef? is my second novel and I had a great deal of fun writing it.Paul Hollywood

My background is in the catering and hospitality industry and over the years I progressed from pot washer to owning and running some really fun businesses. Catering is hard work, long hours and often a thankless profession but in this book I take a look at the high end – what happens when the chefs reach a level whereby they have a public profile and want to capitalise on it? Celebrity Chefs today have a great life. The public adore them and the money is high, a ‘household name’ can have their name in the spotlight and become a person everyone feels that they know. You see them everywhere, from food festivals to TV programmes, in cookery books and endorsing products – even advertising underwear (will Paul Hollywood get the ‘pants deal’?). Their lives seem perfect as they ride the crest of the cookery wave. But behind the scenes it may be a different story…

Celebrity Chef Arrested ImageHow does a chef embrace the media? One minute he or she is behind their stove, working hard to pay the bills, then they enter a competition or apply for a guest slot on a TV show and, with the help of a good agent, they suddenly find fame and fortune. How do they cope? Is the camera kind? Does the viewing audience really like them? As their lives become public property paranoia may set in and they spiral – drink, drugs and constant confidence boosts can become the rock and roll of their cookery world. Marriages often crumble as fast as stale cake, as they rise like a soufflé through the celebrity ranks.

Hilary Hargreaves is the main character in the book. She is a tough media agent with a great deal of experience and her working and Wardour Streetprivate life becomes intertwined as she battles to maintain a balance. The book takes a light-hearted look as we follow Hilary through the cut-throat world of today’s celebrity chefs. It is based in London, where Hilary has her offices in Wardour Street and moves to County Cork in Ireland where an annual Gourmet Food Festival is held and mayhem breaks out. The beautiful island of Barbados is featured too.

I had great fun researching this book and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it…

Bon Appetit!

I have a confession … I LOVE Paul Hollywood!

So, You Think You’re A Celebity…Chef?

“A fabulous story, it made me shriek with laughter and I loved every twist and turn!”

Valentina Harris – Author, Chef and International Cookery School Host

Mix together…

A tough-cookie media agent who’s clawed her way to the top, and a con-man who wants to open a cookery school. Add in a washed-up celebrity chef whose career needs re-building…

Flavour with…

An aging rock star fresh from rehab, and a Sloane Ranger food writer who gets her own TV show…

Bring to the boil:

At a Gourmet Food Festival, in Ireland, where anything goes!

When media agent Hilary Hargreaves travels to Ireland to look at a campaign for a new cookery school, she meets a blast from her past – the romantic but feckless chef Mickey Lloyd, who is hell-bent on resurrecting his flagging career. Her tough demeanour is rocked as it becomes apparent Mickey’s intentions involve more than a stint behind a stove in his quest to pursue her. But as plans for the school gain momentum, she realises that she’s developing more than a passing interest in reformed alcoholic Long Tom Hendry, who owns the crumbling old mansion where the school will be homed. Hilary has many ingredients to juggle with her demanding client list – which looks set to boil over if she doesn’t keep control. From London’s bustling Soho, to Southern Ireland and the sunny shores of the Caribbean, has Hilary got too much on her plate and is she really prepared to risk it all for love?

“You’ll go NUTS about this book!” – Andrew Nutter, Celebrity Chef
