Makes Me Happy

5. Song – Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen

I never trust people who don’t at least smile when Queen is played. (If you don’t sing along, you are added to my watch list.) And this just may be the happiest Queen song there is.

4. Song – Live Your Life by T.I.

Sometimes you need to juice up your ego and rap music can be a good ego fix. This is my happy go-to song that I often listen to before my speaking events. “Ain’t got no time for no haters.”

3. Song – Rhine & Courtesan by Rachel’s

Sit outside on a beautiful day. Wear headphones. Turn up the volume. Play this song. Close your eyes. Lift your face up to the sun. And let your imagination do the rest. You’ll be soaring by the time the drums really kick in. Promise.

2. Movie – Harold and Maude

Being different is beautiful. It’s a message that’s easy to forget, because being different is hard, especially before you find the people who accept the real true you. And those good accepting people are always out there just waiting for you to find them. I watch this film over and over again to remind myself that no two flowers are the same—ever—and “the opportunity’s on.”

1. Novel – God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

I love Kurt Vonnegut Jr. because he was the first author I ever read repetitively for pure enjoyment. He was also the first man who made me feel it was okay to be empathetic. “There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’”

What makes you happy?
